Drugs and alcohol: harmful cocktails?

Patients taking medicines are commonly warned to avoid drinking alcohol but the advice is often imprecise, misleading or even unnecessary. In this article we examine the interactions between medicines and alcohol and suggest ways of making the advice more helpful.
